At People & Planet, we take huge pride in our student network. For over 50 years, we have been supporting student campaigners through workshops, trainings and resources which give them the tools to win their on-campus aims. Whilst our Divest Borders and Fossil Free Careers campaigns are kicking off accross the country, our flagship Fossil Free campaign is edging closer and closer to a national victory, with 68% of UK universities having made divestment commitments - that's 109 successful Fossil Free campaigns.
So what's next?
We aren't finished yet. We've challenged ourself to hit 75% in 2025, and that means putting in the work to expand our network, by reaching and and setting up campaign groups on campuses which have historically had less involvement in the Fossil Free movement. That's why we've set up a free 10-week campaign training programme for students at specific universities, to bring about that final push towards complete divestment in UK higher education, and to make student activism accessible to all.
A concrete path to more Fossil Free wins.
The second iteration of the programme is running right now, and the incredible students from Liverpool Hope University who took part in the 2021 programme have already secured a Fossil Free commitment and are working hard on Fossil Free Careers!
The programme has been a huge success in introducing students to the world of campaigning, and we've been blown away by the interest and enthusiasm from the campuses we've reached and hope to continue expanding the network and empowering the next generation of activists.
