13 miles! It’s a long way…and 21 amazing people are going to run it for People & Planet.

We’re taking part in London’s first ever half marathon on 12 October. Our 21 amazing runners will be amongst 12,500 people racing through London’s beautiful Royal Parks and past London’s most spectacular sights.

We have just over a week to help them raise bags of cash for People & Planet. Please support them via their online sponsorship pages. Donating is quick and easy and every penny will support our work campaigning on human rights, world poverty and the environment. Plus we can claim Gift Aid which means that if you donate £10 it’s worth £12.82…nice eh.

These are our amazing runners, click on their names to sponsor them: Kate Hand, Tom Chance, Philip MacDonald, Luke Robinson, Bryony-Beth Cruickshank, Rachel Thorp, James Trewby, Peter Bray, Nick Chan, Daniel Abrams, Lizzie Jeans, Lucie Kinchin, Eleanor Smith, Frances Sleap, William Routh, Sarah Wilson, Graham Craig, Dan Harris, Luke Oliver, Lewis Basset, Emma Hughes.

Nick Chan after running the London marathon

Nick is undertaking an epic MARATHONATHON for People & Planet this year. He’s already run the Reading half marathon, London Marathon and Edinburgh Marathon! Ouch! He says: “Together with hundreds and thousands of fellow students, we’re being the change we wish to see in the world. Whatever help that you can contribute through sponsoring my runs will help to train more activists, deliver more effective campaigns and make change happen.”

Runners Luke and Rachel say:

“Both of us are members of Aberystwyth People and Planet Group and have been for three years. In the last year we have become increasingly involved with the running of the group organising band nights, publicity stunts and socials. We are participating in the half marathon because we understand the importance of unrestricted funding for the continuation of effective campaigning. The supporters of People and Planet must fundraise to ensure campaigns can be run by the student network for many years to come.”

Runner Bryony-Beth says:

“It’s the perfect opportunity to raise money for a good cause and get a real sense of achievement at the end.”

Runner Phil says:

“I’m running because I’ve never done a run this long before, and because P&P made me realise we can all do something to improve the world, and I want to help them make those changes! Plus P&P doesn’t have much money at the moment, so they need all the support they can get!”

Graham Craig Portrait

Graham says: “I decided to run the Royal Parks Half Marathon for P&P because working for P&P as an intern in 07-08 was one of the highlights of my life so far. It gave me an understanding of how an organisation on even a small budget can achieve so much. I know that P&P will make the absolute most of the few hundred pounds I raise.

I haven’t really started training yet. I did a marathon four years ago and am banking on that experience really. For me it’s 100% psychological - I know I can run a half marathon in an hour and three quarters so I don’t feel like I need to do so much training. Now a marathon would be a different matter altogether…that hurt!”

Ellie training for her run

Ellie says: “If I didn’t know how important this kind of fundraising was to keep student campaigners in banners and flip charts then its not likely I’d be putting myself through this, but as it is I’m raring to go.”
