Go Green Week was a huge success this year with 39 groups at schools, colleges and universities taking action on climate change. The week also led to 51 institutions signing up to the Green Education Declaration. To make sure that Go Green Week is an even bigger success next year be sure to put next year’s date in your diary.
This year’s week saw a Go Green conference at City Hall for 170 sixth formers from 40 schools across London; meanwhile at universities both newer groups such as Cumbria and veterans of the Go Green campaign such as Warwick took action as well as school and college groups.
Cumbria P&P, who only formed this year, put on a really impressive week of events. The week included a human banner, a Pizza and DVD Night, a Camp Out on campus, hands-on work on environmental issues, a Plug and Play Night (P&P) night of live entertainment, and lobbying of their MP and University Executive where a tree was made out of cardboard and picture petitions attached.
At Warwick, who have put on many hugely successful Go Green Weeks in the past, the P&P group lived up to their reputation with another top class week of action. Even though they have already ‘Gone Green’ they used the Green League to secure a commitment to introduce recycling in all uni halls by autumn this year.
Warwick’s week included: an Arts Day which centred around a party in the piazza with a cycle-powered smoothie maker, a tipi, giant games, stalls and bands, and a talk on vegetarianism and the environment with free food and a Green banana club night where people came dressed in green.
A Green Technology Day which included a cycle to campus, an exhibition of various forms of green transport around the piazza, talks on “How Green is Warwick?” and “Green or Greenwash”.
A Development Day included direct action on Ditch Dirty Development. At the same time there was a: Slum Survivor obstacle course in the piazza, a Workshop on “Kyoto Revisited”, and a talk on “Is Development sustainable?”.
On the Thursday they also joined in the national Big Green Lobby which proved a hugely successful way to influence the University. The group organised an “Environmental Question Time”, a film showing of “Who killed the electric car? and the day was capped of with a Warwicksnow fundraising party - “Global Cooling”. The week was finished with a fantastic green themed sports.
So make sure that you put next year’s date in your diaries today and make your Go Green Week as great at these two examples.
