Go Green Actions

  • The group started running the campaign last year and met with their Rector to make the 4 Go Green demands.
  • Go Green petitions were collected and the Rector was challenged publicly on his stance on environmental issues at Imperial events by members of ESoc.
  • Several members attended a London 21 seminar on greening London universities last term and a planning meeting was held early this term to plan their sustainability campaign.
  • Working closely with SU Deputy President and also liasing with other London P&P groups via the London 21 initiative.
  • Wrote a letter to the Rector based on the environmental policy questioning what action is being taken on each point. A response is expected shortly.
  • An Environmental Week in March launched the campaign publicly with lots of stalls to collect more leaf petitions for a Go Green Tree. They organised speaker events including some of Imperial’s Climate Change researchers, workshops on recycling in collaboration with London Halls Recycling Project and lots of exciting stunts were planned in collaboration with other societies!

Go Green Petition

The group have already collected over 1500 petitions for Go Green and surpassed the target of 1000 signatures they’d set for Spring Term. This represents 10% of Imperial’s student population and will put considerable pressure on the College to Go Green. ESoc members also baked their famous ‘green’ biscuits and handed out Go Green ribbons to encourage people to sign the petition before hanging them on a tree.
There are also plans to reprint the Go Green leaf petition in their student paper the Felix as part of a special 4-page Go Green pullout so that it will reach even more students!

Go Green Success

  • Have secured the support of the Student Union and other societies for going green.
  • Successful press work last year highlighting Imperial’s poor environmental performance
  • The group have built strong links with their Energy Manager who is helping them to approach the College and working closely with the group on Environment Week for March 2006. At a recent meeting he said “I’m an ally to them, as they are an ally to me. We’re working towards the same goals”.
  • The group have also successfully obtained and developed a ‘wildlife’ garden near to campus.
  • Over 1500 leaf petitions were signed calling on Imperial to Go Green and were presented to the Rector on a Go Green Tree at the culmination of Environment Week.
